If your home suffers an electrical outage, one of your first thoughts might be how long your perishable foods are going to last in the fridge and freezer.
The most important rule is to not open the fridge and freezer doors at all to check how things are going.
- Food in the refrigerator should be good for four hours, while a full freezer will keep an adequate temperature for about 48 hours as long as the doors remain closed.
- Once power returns, check the freezer thermometer. While the temperature in the freezer may have risen, as long as it reads 40°F/4°C or below, or if the food still contains ice crystals, the food is safe to refreeze or cook.
